From Green Countryside to City Landscape
圖畫書: "推土機年年作響"
Topics for discussions:
The seven pictures depict how this rural area has changed from countryside scenry to city landscape over the span of several decades--a person's lifetime.
If we view the pictures in chronological order one after another, not much difference would be noticed between any consecutive two pictures. However, if we put the first picture and the last one side by side and make a comparison, the differences are drastic.
The country house, which used to be surrounded by a running creek, a vegetable garden, meadows, a beautiful pond, trees, and woods, was torn down and gave way to a busy superhighway.
The whole area is now occupied by office buildings and factories and not much greenry can be found. All the natural forms of life, including plants, animals, and insects, have left few traces here. The residents' connection to Nature has been cut off.
However, city life seems to promise urban and uburban residents a convenient life: Stores, schools, hospitals, and workplaces flock together to offer services in need. Instead of travelling long hours or days to get to town, residents now can commute by automobiles via highways within minutes or hours.
What have the residents lost when they trade natural connections with economic growth or living conveniences? Why can't we have both at the same time?
How would you cope with the fast pace of urbanization, deforestation, and industrialization at your hometown, if it is located in countryside?
How would you re-establish your connection with Nature, if you have been an urban resident since childhood? Is it possible for you to have natural scenerye and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously?

I love nature and countryside even though Cities are very advanced and convenient. It is kind of sarcastic that those who pursue convenience and amenity live under great pressure. Why don’t they go back to Nature? We shouldn’t destroy the beauty of Nature. At least, we should keep balance between pollution and Nature.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a little child, I lived in Tainan County, full of rice field. Its countryside is so beautiful, especially in winter, the farmers will plant yellow flowers of rape to be the natural fertilizer for the soil. I live in a carefree and healthy life there. Later, because my parents’ jobs, we moved to Chia-yi. At first, I hardly adapted to the kind of polluted city, so I had many pimples on my face. Finally, my pimples disappeared and began being accustomed to living in Chia-yi.
Now, because of studying, I live in Taipei. I think I was confined in this metropolis, filled with public transportation and noise pollution. Usually, I can’t see any stars from my dormitory due to serious light pollution. Besides, even though there are some parks, they will become little compared to Tainan County.
I began to miss my hometown and reconsider the importance of Nature. We should go back to Nature, respect and protect it. Therefore, I think I will recycle correctly and reuse frequently. When I become older, I want to buy a house in countryside, living with Nature.

When I first moved from Soutern Taiwan to Taipei City, I noticed the following facts:
ReplyDelete(1) air was dusty and dirty.
(2) Everything was so clowded and not much space to run about and play around.
(3) People were very cold and sometimes rude. Business people were sensitive to whether we had the money to buy their goods rather than whether we needed help in some way.
However, Taipei City also offered something valuable:
(1) A public library helped me study.
(2) Bookstores were within reach by buses.
(3) Schools were good at sending students to better highschhools and universities.
Therefore, I am not complainng about city life. However, if we can have more plants around us and if we can get connected to natural worlds by going hiking or strolling in parks, the situation will be improved a lot.
Human beings are part of Nature and founders of our own civilization. In creating civilization, we should keep in mind that we are part of the whole eco-system and there is no way that we can seperate ourselves from Nature.

With technology becomes more and more advanced, the development of economic growth and conveniences around people have covered the natural places. I think that if we made an adequate approach to construct the place we lived, we could have both beautiful scenery and convenient life.
ReplyDeleteBecause I live in a natural and quiet countryside, I will try to learn much about the advanced technology, and get used to it. But I don’t let my hometown be covered by those modern things.
If I lived in an urban city, I would go to a rural countryside and breathe fresh air there with my family whenever I had time. Living conveniently and keeping healthy are both important things to me!

What have the residents lost when they trade natural connections with economic growth or living conveniences?
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, dwellers lost the originalities of live which contributes to suffering from modern diseases such as obesity and high-blood pressure. People live in metropolis often eat fast food contained high proportion of salt, sugar, oil because they are too busy to prepare meals for themselves. On the other hand, people resident in countryside enjoy the healthy grind reaped from rice fields without any pollution. Therefore, they live longer than those stay in the city.
Why can't we have both at the same time?
If we want the convenience of life, we need to sacrifice something like turning rice paddy into lands for buildings or deforesting old trees for commercial activities. It is conspicuous that you cannot sell the cow and drink the milk.
How would you cope with the fast pace of urbanization, deforestation, and industrialization at your hometown, if it is located in countryside?
Actually, I am confronting this issue right now. My hometown is located in countryside in Changhua; however, the governments attempt to expand roads near my house for general benefits’ sake. Before long, some trees are cut down and roads become bigger than before. All I can do is to adjust myself to this kind of urbanization and accept it with positive attitude. After all, these roads belong to every resident; besides, it much more relaxed for hot-tempered commuters.
How would you re-establish your connection with Nature, if you have been an urban resident since childhood?
I think I would like to purchase a house in suburban area to compensate for the regret of not having connection with Nature. There are two benefits resident in suburban area, one is I can enjoy the higher quality life than urban area; the other is to re-establish the acquaintance with Nature.
Is it possible for you to have natural scenerye and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously?
It is a little bit challenging to have both landscapes co-exist at the same time. We all know that even though there are some man-made natural scenery at the house, we still pursue traveling to the original places. The inevitability of industrialization always ruins precious natural relics. But considering the advancement of technology; perhaps living in the city combined with natural and modern is anticipative.
From ~Saleishia yung Student ID:98540315
As time goes by, small rural countryside became big prosperous metropolis. People no longer lead a plain and ordinary life. People do not live by farming and agriculture as previously. With the progress of the technology, traffic systems, furniture, electronic devices are all updated and advanced now.
ReplyDeletePeople used to be simple and carefree about their lifestyle. They were satisfied and contend with themselves if they could earn for their breads. They didn’t want to explore and extend their habitats like naïve animals. However, time changed. People were getting aggressive. Beginning from industrial revolution, people’s living styles have altered. People establish a lot of factories, numerous machines which produce contaminated airs and poisonous exhausts. There are more and more greenhouse gases in the air. Therefore, our earth becomes hot.
Living is a big city actually brings much convenience. Nonetheless, we cannot sniff the smell of nature anymore. How to balance with this precious globe is the issue we are concerning and dealing with now.

It’s a shame for those living in urban areas because there are challenging surroundings and there is lovely scenery. Those born into families in urban areas had very different childhood from those in suburban areas. People downtown have missed numerous interesting childhood games and thus are less experienced than people uptown and in the countryside. There are unique insects and lively flowers and grass are waving hands to those in the countryside.
ReplyDeleteLiving comfortable means we have to sacrifice something. To gain is to pain. Constructions are sure to destroy the wonderful landscape of the nature. Roads are built in place of farms and woods. Furniture built out of wood certainly do harm to the Mother Nature.
It’s acceptable to do some changes to the countryside to make life in suburban areas more comfortable, ex. Road. However, if excavators uncontrollably destroy surrounding suburban areas on a large scale, we should gather together to fight against policies the governments or administrations have enacted worldwide. If factories are meant to be constructed near or in countryside and thus pollute pure air of the suburban, we can seek domestic environmental groups for help or international conferences to influence environmental bills.
Go rent a bike and cycle around to touch the nature intimately. Learning how to appreciate the nature can let you be more concerned about it. Another option would be carpool with friends to enjoy the beauty of nature. Take a cable car to take the panorama of nature into your eye.
Nature is silent and we are arrogant. Therefore, I don’t think we would be considerate toward nature; instead, we take it for granted. People keep neglecting the nature’s feelings. The pain the nature is getting now will someday be poured upon us.

We can differentiate the order from the sceneries in those pictures. At first, the air is fresh and clean, the lake where few docks swim on it is blue, there are many large and green tree, people there harvest their grain, and the meadows are everywhere. But with the times pass by, the country is no longer beautiful; it start to develop traffic systems, high buildings, high ways, and factories which make the air become dirty and produce many smoke and fog. It becomes an noisy urban city from a tranquil country.
ReplyDeletePeople lost the knowledge about the nature and they become indifferent to people and their lives. In the past, people would chat with others outside their house when they harvest, and the children could play with many neighbors in the childhoods. The life in country is uncomplicated; on the other hand, the urban life is busy and people don’t have much time to relax or appreciate the natural beauty. The urban people even have to breathe dirty air which causes many health problems and noises are everywhere.
But most people will choose urban life because it’s convenient and prosperous. We can’t have the advantages of the two kinds of lives at the same time because there are too many differences between the city and the country. Life can’t be completely perfect.
I would call for all the people in my hometown to stand up and find solutions to prevent our home from being destroyed. Maybe we will march on the road to express how against are we toward the project or write letter to the government. We want a unsophisticated countryside instead of city. If we want to live in city, we would move there but we still live in the countryside. We have to protect the rare green land and keep connection with nature. Deforestation and industrialization will cause the land problem, such as mudslide and flood when typhoon happened.
Of course that I want to let nature and cities co-exist harmoniously. If I had ability, I would try to plant more grass and trees in the city to let the city become full of green
plant. Besides, ask the government to build park instead of a lot of skyscrapers that are everywhere in the urban. In addition, on top of the skyscrapers, plants can grow there. We have to concern about the nature now because we are losing it gradually.

With the high development of technology, we human beings are eager for much more convenient life; therefore, we keep destroying Nature because of our greedy and regard wealth and fame as the most significant thing that we can’t live without. However, Nature is more vital than things that I’ve mentioned above because it is second to none and now we should come up with some solutions to rescue our dear Nature. My viewpoints are as follows: First, we must plant five or more trees as felling merely one tree. Second, the government should fine those people who deforest illegally which cause mudslide. Third, we have to economize on the use of water by decreasing the frequency of washing our cars, remembering to switch off the faucets and recycling water. Last but not least, when expanding new area we should reserve some places for planting.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I am concerned, we absolutely can get along well with Nature as long as we take good care of her and show our respect toward her. For example, we can cultivate flowers and trees which give us a breath of fresh air around the landscape. Also, we can advocate growing a number of potted plants which can beautify our environment.
In Taiwan, almost every place becomes urban. As a result, we lose lots of beautiful scenery and also some relationships between everyone.
ReplyDeleteWhen people lived in countryside, they have close relationship with our neighbors. However, as human beings started to urbanize countryside, the bonds were cut off by skyscrapers. People pursue everything they don’t have so they try their best to build mansions and modern structures, but they forget what they have had, Nature.
If I lived in countryside and my hometown was forced to be urbanized and industrialized, I would feel upset and disappointed. My hometown was a beautiful place full of green, thrifty trees, but it would become a cold, stiff city. Why wouldn’t I feel sad?
As many trees are deforested, our nature becomes weaker and weaker, but when people find out that our environment is damaged and on the brink of destruction, all we can do is diminish damages and promote the protections as soon as possible. After all, we don’t have another Earth.
student ID:98540329
Nowadays, we live in a city which is convenient and highly developed. When we look outside the window, we see a lot of buildings, cars and many people. If we look closely, we can even discover the dirt in the air and lots of trash on our streets. It’s so sad that our beautiful scenes, like mountain covered with flowers and frogs swimming in the pond, are all gone. It becomes hard for us to see such beautiful scenery in our daily life.
ReplyDeleteWhen we decided to trade nature with economic growth and living conveniences, we lost the pure natural scenes. Once fresh air becomes not fresh anymore, and clear water is being polluted. When the environment is getting worse and worse to some extent, people start to lose their innocence gradually because of the rapid pace of their lives. All they care about is money.
I have to say that it’s difficult to both develop our economy and maintain our environment. If we develop economy, we need to exploit the land. Once we do it, the nature is being destroyed little by little because we need more places to build factories, houses and apartments. However, if we maintain our environment now, we won’t live in such high-developed and convenient city.
Everybody should do some good to our earth. We should save energy and plant more trees to make the environment become better and better. Some people now are finding ways to keep balance between nature and environment. They invent some environmental things in place of energy-wasted things. Some people even clean rivers and beaches in order to let people see how beautiful nature is. As a result, we still can look forward to our earth become cleaner.

ReplyDeleteI still live in the country-side, even though I am out from my hometown to study. When I was a child, I liked to close to Nature. There are countless rice fields around my house, and I liked to watch rice growing up and farmers worked hard. It was green everywhere, and it was really, absolutely beautiful, and I think I would never forget the scenery from my mind. It is God’s masterpiece.
ReplyDeleteHowever, time passed, many things changed just like the picture book presents. Some people who want to make a profit bought fields from farmers and started to construct factories. Even though some fields around my house are still not bought, the water and the land were polluted from by the smog and the waste water from factories. Everything is ruined, and every time I go home, I could do nothing but mourn to those disappeared beautiful scenery.
I think we absolutely could fine some good ways to harmoniously co-exist between the natural scenery and city landscape. If we first consider that whether it would harm our nature when we are going to carry out some plans or strategies, it would be good and we can find other ways to replace the original one. Human used to get along with the Nature; however, human became more and more greedy, they just forget they need to get along and respect the Nature.
We should protect our natural environment and respect it. Everything of life is related to the Nature, and it is not difficult for us to do things like recycling or turning off the light when leaving the room. With simple action, the Nature will get better.

ReplyDeleteFor those who have been living in the big cities for a long time, they may not have any improper feelings. They have gotten accustomed to this kind of life. While for those who move from the countryside they know their lives have changed a lot. There is no spacious place to hang around. There is no nature scenery to watch. There are tall buildings everywhere and numerous vehicles constantly pass on the road.
ReplyDeleteI live in the countryside in south Taiwan. In my hometown, there are not so many tall buildings but some farms. The life there is kind of rural. After I enter NTUT I find life here is fast-paced. Pedestrians walk fast. Cars are driven fast. And it is almost impossible to see any green land around. I prefer the life in my hometown. It is simple and slow-paced.
My ideal life surrounding is that there are both nature scenery and city landscape. For example, the suburbs near big cities. In that case, I can live with the countryside but not far away from big cities. Thus, I think it is proper to leave some places while industrialization.

What have the residents lost when they trade natural connections with economic growth or living conveniences? Why can't we have both at the same time?
ReplyDeleteWhen the residents trade natural connections with economic growth or living conveniences, they have lost the simplicity of country living ; for instance, your neighbors wouldn’t show their concern for you but keep themselves apart form you. That is because they are very busy and nearly have no time to chat with people, which decrease their passion and youthful vigor.
It is extremely hard to have both economic growth or living conveniences and natural beauty at the same time since the factory must release a lot of exhaust gas, which pollute the air and the development of industry must develop many land, which animals live in. By doing so, natural environment would be almost destruct.
How would you cope with the fast pace of urbanization, deforestation, and industrialization at your hometown, if it is located in countryside?
If my hometown is going to be urbanized, I will call on the people to rise up against the project to show our discontented and anger. Since if our hometown is urbanized, we can’t appreciate the beautiful scenery and breathe the fresh air anymore.
How would you re-establish your connection with Nature, if you have been an urban resident since childhood? Is it possible for you to have natural scenery and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously?
I would go mountain-climbing and natural environment in my free time to re-establish my connection with Nature and let myself relax.
Yes, it is possible for me to have scenery and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously. I can plant as many trees and flowers as possible in my backyard to attract birds and little animals to stay. In addition, I can write a letter to government to ask them to plant more trees on each side of the pavement and build more natural parks to preserve the wildlife.

1.What have the residents lost when they trade natural connections with economic growth or living conveniences? Why can't we have both at the same time?
ReplyDeleteAs our society becomes more and more progressive nowadays, we can see that many countries develop high-tech industry to boost their economic growth. It is inevitable that many factories are being constructed and used in the suburbs or countryside, which result in the destruction of our mother nature. Also, some lands once used for agriculture become polluted by chemicals and discarded. In the big cities, more and more buildings are being constructed everywhere and numerous vehicles are running on the roads every day. Besides the fact that our living environment becomes crowded and smaller, the air pollution gets worse gradually. In my opinion, it is very difficult to have economic interest and protection of the Nature at the same time since it is hard to make a balance between them.
2.How would you cope with the fast pace of urbanization, deforestation, and industrialization at your hometown, if it is located in countryside?
If I lived in the countryside where these things happen, I would try to adapt myself to the environment. When I just moved to Taipei, it is hard for me to get used to the fast pace of everything. There are many cars and pedestrians on the roads. The buildings are springing up one after another. Even though now I come to adapt to the environment, I still hope to see that there are many green places or lands provided for people to relax and enjoy the scenery. We should try to protect our mother nature as possible as we can.
3.How would you re-establish your connection with Nature, if you have been an urban resident since childhood? Is it possible for you to have natural scenery and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously?
I would try to make myself become close to the Nature. In my free time, I could go to countryside to enjoy the landscapes. As in the city, I could go to parks or cultivate some flowers or plants in the garden. By doing so, I think it may be possible to have natural scenery and city landscape at the same time. All we need to do is protect the Nature and do it good rather than chase after develop high-tech industry invariably.

What have the residents lost when they trade natural connections with economic growth or living conveniences? Why can't we have both at the same time?
ReplyDeleteNot only the natural connections but also consciousness of protecting nature is the thing they lost. Obviously, they lost mother nature, field, and rivers. But what about the thing we couldn’t see, that is the most terrible part instead. People become selfish, indifferent, and snobbish. You can’t have your cake and eat it all too. That’s the life it is. At any rate, we try so hard, but we only could reach the limit in some extent.
How would you cope with the fast pace of urbanization, deforestation, and industrialization at your hometown, if it is located in countryside?
Frankly speaking, I thought I get nothing to do. No matter how strive we are, we are still minor. All we can do is adjust our mind to accept the changes which have been made. I would make myself to adapt to the fast pace world rather than repudiate it and complain about changing all the time.
How would you re-establish your connection with Nature, if you have been an urban resident since childhood? Is it possible for you to have natural scenerye and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously?
First of all, I have to build up my mind to embrace the nature since I was born in the city. The thing I have seen and felt have nothing to do with any nature. Maybe I could take a trip to uptown or outskirts to cultivate my eager to be a nature-lover.
It is a little bit awkward for me to see the natural scenery and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously. That always makes me think about the disaster such as mudslide, landslide, disturbing of animals… and so on. It would be chaos that we cannot cope with entirely.
from Alfie 曾昱翔 Student ID:95360306
1.The residents lost the most valuable treasure which is the natural resources. As the economic growth and the improvement of living conveniences, the residents lost trees, rivers, field, insects, and birds. Those treasures were unique and couldn’t be replaced by anything else.
ReplyDeleteAs the country became modern, they needed more and more resources to build modern constructions. To fulfill the need of materials, they had to cut off the trees. In order to increase the room for those buildings like hospital, convenient stores and highway, they had to fill the rivers. It is not avoidable to sacrifice the natural resource for convenience; all we could do is to make the balance between the nature and the urbanization.
2.As the fast pace of urbanization, I would fit myself to the changes in a short time. Although the nature was gradually destroyed by the urbanization, I still could put a little effort to preserve the nature. I would plant some trees or flowers near the modern buildings in order to build up the connection with the nature.
3.We could re-establish our connection with Nature by having a travel to the recreation farms, such as the National Parks and the forest in the mountain. Those places helps a lot in preserving the undestroyed nature, we could interact with the plants and animals there.
I think it is possible to have natural scenery and city landscape co-exist side by side harmoniously. We could achieve it by building more parks in the city, we might take a walk, go jogging, take a break, relax yourself in the parks. Nowadays, the government places importance on nature step by step and uses more and more money to carry out their plan. We would have a convenient live with natural resources and at the same time preserve the nature well.
